'Awakening' leads to soldier's status as conscientious objector

24 September 2008

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A federal judge has ordered the Army to
grant conscientious objector status and an honorable discharge to a
soldier who says he experienced a religious awakening in Iraq.

The ruling supersedes the Army's decision last year to deny Pfc.
Michael Barnes' request. Barnes had told the Army that his religious
experience two years ago left him opposed to war in any form.

U.S. District Judge John Sedwick said military investigators failed
to provide "a basis in fact" to support their contention that
Barnes' religious objections to war were insincere.

Dawson, and Sgt. Wesley Durbin, 26, are said to have been shot and
killed by another U.S. soldier on Sunday at a base south of Baghdad.

Darryl and his wife, Maxine (Dawson's stepmother), say the military

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The rate of suicides among-active duty soldiers
is on pace to surpass both last year's numbers and the rate of
suicide in the general U.S. population for the first time since the
Vietnam war, according to U.S. Army officials.

As of August, 62 Army soldiers have committed suicide, and 31 cases
of possible suicide remain under investigation, according to Army
statistics. Last year, the Army recorded 115 suicides among its
ranks, which was also higher than the previous year.

Prevent Congress from forcing JROTC into high schools

By Pat Elder

On Sept. 17, the U.S. Senate will consider 230 proposed amendments to the
2009 National Defense Authorization Act. (NDAA) Included is amendment #5331, introduced by Sen. John Conryn of Texas. It would deny federal funds to high school that refuse to allow a Jr. Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Currently, public schools may refuse JROTC programs without penalty.

Many JROTC programs include rifle ranges, all use textbooks provided by the Pentagon and are highly effective recruitment programs for the military.
